A Development to be continued...

Scientists find gas pedal - and brake - for uncontrolled cell growth
(Nanowerk News) Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a new way to regulate the uncontrolled growth of blood vessels, a major problem in a broad range of diseases and conditions.
The findings are published in the online edition of Nature Medicine by David A. Cheresh, PhD, professor of pathology in the UC San Diego School of Medicine and associate director for translational research at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, and colleagues at the cancer center and at the University of Michigan.
By delivering more of this microRNA, the scientists said, it may be possible to promote new blood vessel development in patients who have suffered tissue damage from stroke, heart attacks, or diabetes. Conversely, treating patients with the anti-miR might reduce or inhibit blood vessel development in tumors or help reduce inflammation.

New solar energy conversion process could revamp solar power production

Stanford engineers have figured out how to simultaneously use the light and heat of the sun to generate electricity in a way that could make solar power production more than twice as efficient as existing methods and potentially cheap enough to compete with oil.

Information and Inspiration

clipped from www.dailyom.com
We are the only true experts on our journey to enlightenment. Filter all information through your own heart.

All the major spiritual traditions serve the purpose of offering us a roadmap to guide us on our individual journeys to enlightenment. These roadmaps are made up of moral codes, parables, and, in some cases, detailed descriptions of mystical states. We often study the fine points of a particular ascended master’s narrative in order to better understand our own and to seek inspiration and guidance on our path. In the same way, when we plan a road trip, we carry maps and guidebooks in an effort to understand where we are going. In both cases, though, the journey has a life of its own and maps, while helpful, can only take us so far. There is just no comparison between looking at a line on a piece of paper and driving your own car down the road that line represents.

Einstein's Secret to Amazing Problem Solving

Thanks to "mugofcoffee" for the head's up.
Einstein's Secret to Jaw-Dropping Problem Solving

The Problem Is To Know What the Problem Is

Problem Definition Tools and Strategies

1. Rephrase the Problem

When a Toyota executive asked employees to brainstorm “ways to increase their productivity”, all he got back were blank stares. When he rephrased his request as “ways to make their jobs easier”, he could barely keep up with the amount of suggestions.

2. Expose and Challenge Assumptions

Every problem — no matter how apparently simple it may be — comes with a long list of assumptions attached. Many of these assumptions may be inaccurate and could make your problem statement inadequate or even misguided.

5. Find Multiple Perspectives

6. Use Effective Language Constructs

7. Make It Engaging

8. Reverse the Problem

9. Gather Facts

10. Problem-Solve Your Problem Statement

Whimsical Wind

Swedish Energy Ball adds whimsy to wind turbines Looking more like a whirly gig than a wind turbine, the Energy Ball is a new Swedish wind turbine specifically designed to be quiet and efficient.  Home Energy, the company that created the Energy Ball, primarily designs green energy systems for the home.

This new wind turbine utilizes the Venturi effect.  One example of the Venturi effect is the increased wind speed of winds funneled between buildings.  The unique design of the Energy Ball funnels the wind through the spherical blades increasing the energy harvested.  Taking advantage of this principle allows this wind turbine to generate at wind speeds as low as 2 m/s or 4 mph.

The Energy Ball is also extremely quiet making it more acceptable to neighbors and zoning boards.  Since this wind turbine is not your typical three bladed giant, it may also gain points in the looks department.  The design looks fun and whimsical rather than utilitarian.
